Chapter 8

Helena

Another night came and went. Vick and Lincoln crashed in the living room while Douglas joined them. He still hadn’t spoken to me directly. He talked to us all after several hours of being on the phone with witches and hunters across the globe, seeking out answers to his questions. From what he found, the spell Logan was trying to cast would indeed steal away the magic from the Moonfall line. We had four, maybe five days at most, to figure out where he was and stop him.

Otherwise, it’d be bye-bye magic for good.

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I made a pot of coffee once I reached the kitchen. I hadn’t exactly slept, and more or less passed out from exhaustion around two in the morning. Now that I was back to being centered, it was easier to tune out everyone else’s emotions. I had, all except for Douglas’s. His were harder to block, and there was so much rage waiting for a chance to explode. I was determined to talk to him today, or to get him to tell Vick or Norn what he was going through. If he kept bottling it up, he would be no use to us in a fight against Logan.

Hadley and Edric were heading into town today with Vick and Lincoln to check in with Sheriff Bernie and Mayor Dillwood. We didn’t exactly have good news, but at least there was news. I peeked into the living room while the coffee brewed.

I frowned. Douglas had been passed out in the armchair a few minutes ago. Now he was gone.

“Great,” I mumbled to myself as Norn and Rina came downstairs. Seeing Rina so happy, and feeling their love wash over me brought a smile to my face.

“What are you grinning about?” Rina asked, linking her arm around mine while we went to the kitchen.

“You two. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.”

Rina frowned. “You talk to Douglas yet?”

“What do you think? The second I came down here, he darted upstairs.”

“Can you blame him?” Norn asked, pulling coffee mugs from the cabinet, and lining them up on the counter. “He could’ve seriously hurt you, Helena. He’s not going to let that go easily.”

“I think it’s more than that,” I said, glancing toward the ceiling when I heard the old pipes groan as the shower turned on. “He’s not okay. Not even close.”

Norn breathed out heavily through his nose. “I know. I mean, I didn’t see it before, but I do now.”

“So, what am I supposed to do, huh?”

“Don’t let him hide for one,” Norn instructed. “The more he’s by himself, the more the memories and the emotions will torment him. Rip him apart. I watched my brother die, and I lost the will to live. He witnessed his entire coven murdered in a single night. That grief and anger won’t ever simply go away.”

“He wants to kill Logan,” I whispered. “He’s been plotting revenge for years. If he does take down the bastard, he’ll be giving in to all that negativity and darkness.
